KINGSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island women's
volleyball team (4-3) outlasted Maryland Eastern Shore 3-2 Thursday
night at Keaney Gymnasium in the first day of the 2010 Art
Carmichael Invitational.
Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Britta Baarstad
tallied a team-best 13 kills, while teammates Lauren McIntosh,
Jill
Anderson, Kayla Wilson and Rachel
Zarazan chipped in with nine kills apiece.
Defensively for the Rams, sophomore Ashley Tennant led
the way with 10 digs.
Rhody claimed a 25-20 win in game one as it hit .320 in the
first set, but UMES charged back with a 25-22 triumph in game two
to even the match at one game apiece.
URI reclaimed the lead in the third set as it tallied a 25-22
win to take 2-1 lead, but UMES claimed a 25-18 win in four to force
a deciding fifth game.
In the fifth game, URI captured a 15-10 victory thanks to four
kills from Baarstad, who hit .429 in the frame, propelling Rhody to
a match victory.
Rhody returns to action Friday night as it faces off against New
Hampshire at 7 p.m. inside Keaney Gymnasium.
