Jan. 19, 2011

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA -- Delroy James registered his sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds, leading Rhode Island to a 64-59 win at Saint Joseph's.

Akeem Richmond (13 points) and Marquis Jones (12) also tallied double-figures for the Rams (12-6; 3-1 A-10) in the victory - Rhody's third straight.

Both the Hawks (5-13; 0-5 A-10) and Rams traded baskets for much of the first 6:00 of the game, with neither team gaining more than a three-point advantage. After two free throws from SJU's Carl Jones made it 13-12 Rhody with 14:16 left in the half, the Rams countered with a 9-1 scoring run over the next 5:54. An Orion Outerbridge jumper capped the run, making it 22-13 with 8:23 left in the period.

Saint Joseph's followed up with an 8-1 push of its own, cutting it to 23-21 with 6:38 to go, but the Runnin' Rams would score seven unanswered over the next 1:04, regaining a nine-point lead at 30-21.

But from there, the Hawks outscored Rhode Island, 16-5, to close out first half play, taking a 37-35 lead into the locker room at the break. The first half featured one tie and four lead changes.

In the second half, after SJU took a 43-42 lead with 15:26 remaining, Rhode Island began a 10-0 run, thanks to 3-pointers from James and Richmond, while also getting baskets from Outerbridge and Jones, en route to taking a 52-43 lead with 8:47 to play.

The Hawks' Carl Jones scored the next five points, getting Saint Joseph's as close as four points - 54-50 with 6:41 - but that was as close as they would get.

The Rams' turned to Marquis Jones late, as the senior point guard scored six of his team's final eight points down the stretch to seal the victory.

For the game, Rhode Island outrebounded the Hawks, 41-36, and dished out 12 assists to just seven turnovers. URI forced Saint Joseph's into 14 turnovers.

URI returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Thomas M. Ryan Center when it hosts La Salle at 2 p.m. The first 2,000 fans will receive a free Rhody the Ram bobblehead doll, courtesy of Westerly Community Credit Union.
