TODAY'S GAME - NEBRASKA

  • Today marks the first time that Rhode Island and Nebraska have met on the hardwood.
  • It also marks the first time two Jim Baron and Doc Sadler-coached teams have faced off against each other.

RHODE ISLAND VERSUS THE BIG TEN CONFERENCE

  • The Rams are 4-9 all-time versus Big Ten opponents.  
  • Rhody earned a 76-64 victory over Northwestern on March 17, 2010 in Kingston in the first round of the NIT
  • Rhode Island split a pair of meetings in 2008-09 versus Penn State, winning 77-72 in the Philly Hoop Group Classic on Nov. 28, 2008 while falling to the Nittany Lions in the second round of the NIT on March 19, 2009 in State College, Pa.

Jamal Wilson NAMED ATLANTIC 10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK

  • After his 38-point performance at George Mason on Nov. 11, Wilson earned his first career A-10 honor on Nov. 14.
  • Senior guard was 13-22 from the floor and 11-12 from the foul line, while also grabbing seven boards.
  • Wilson's 38 point game is the highest single-game scoring total in the nation, as of Nov. 18

LAST TIME OUT - TEXAS 100, RHODE ISLAND 90 -  (NOV. 15)

  • Jamal Wilson led Rhody with 24 points (8-19 FG; 6-6 FT), Nikola Malesevic added 22 (6-11 FG; 3-6 3FG; 7-9 FT).
  • Point guard Mike Powell led the team with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals to go along with 13 points.
  • URI trailed by as many as 17 points (34-17) in the first half before closing on a 26-12 push.
  • A Blake Vedder free throw with 13:17 to go in regulation gave the Runnin' Rams a 59-58 lead
  • Rhody struggled from the foul line in the first half (6-of-15), while improving in the second half (13-of-17).
  • 40 of the Runnin' Rams' 90 points came in the paint; 24 points came off of offensive rebounds
  • There were 30 fouls whistled on URI, leading to a record 44 free throw attempts by the Longhorns

  • Rhode Island ranks among the top scoring teams in the country, ranking 16th nationally in points per game - 90.0
  • Conversely, the Runnin' Rams rank 338th out of 339 in scoring defense, allowing 96.0 points per game.
  • Senior Jamal Wilson is the nation's third-leading scorer, pouring in 31.0 points per outing
  • The last time URI posted back-to-back 90 point performances came during the 2009-10 season - Feb. 2 (90 at La Salle) and Feb. 6 (93 vs. UMass).
  • On Nov. 15, Texas became the first Rhody opponent in five years to score 100 or more points in a single-game.
  • The last time URI gave up 100 points in a regulation (40 minute) game was Jan. 21, 1991 at West Virginia (102).

FRESHMEN MAKING AN IMPACT

  • Jonathan Holton ranks fifth among all freshmen nationally in rebounding, pulling down 10.0 boards per game
  • Mike Powell is sixth among all frosh in assists (5.5), 30th in steals (2.0), and 37th in scoring (12.0).
  • Rhody's newcomers account for 30% of the team's scoring, 40% of rebounding, and 74% of assist totals.

HEY, MR. WILSON - JAMAL'S 38-POINT PERFORMANCE AT GEORGE MASON

  • Senior Jamal Wilson poured in a career-high 38 points (13-22 FG; 11-12 FT) at George Mason on Nov. 11.  As of Nov. 13, it is the highest single-game scoring total in the country.
  • Wilson had nine in the first half, 20 in the second half, and nine in the overtime period.
  • He bested his previous career-high of 14 points - set twice.
  • It took Wilson, who missed the first 14 games of the 2010-11 season with a broken foot, 10 games to register 38 points last year.
  • It was the highest point total by a Rhode Island player since Zach Marbury had 38 vs. La Salle on Jan. 27, 2001.

FRESH MEN - NEWCOMERS IN THE STARTING FIVE

  • Mike Powell became the first true freshman to start for the Rams as a pure point guard since Tyson Wheeler in 1994-95.
  • Jonathan Holton's 14 boards tied the highest rebounding total in a Rhody debut since Lamar Odom had 14 versus TCU on Nov. 9, 1998.
  • Additionally, Holton and Odom are the only two Rhody players to record a double-double in points and rebounds in their Rhody debuts.  Holton had 12 points and 14 boards; Odom 19 points and 14 rebounds.
  • The last time Rhody had two freshmen in its starting lineup was Feb. 23, 2005 when Parfait Bitee and Will Daniels were among the first five at UMass.

THE FRENETIC FIVE

  • Rhody's five-player freshman class had its regular season debut on Nov. 11 at George Mason.
  • Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal has dubbed them the "Frantic Five" due to the Runnin' Rams uptempo style of play
  • Jonathan Holton and Mike Powell each cracked the starting lineup, while TJ Buchanan, Rayvon Harris, and Dominique McKoy all saw action off the bench.  
  • The newcomers, paced by Holton and Powell, combined for 39 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists and four steals vs. GMU

RHODY EMBARKS ON CHALLENGING NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE

  • Rhody' s six opponents in the month of November - Mason, Texas, Nebraska, Hofstra, Boston Univ., and Cleveland State - combined for 143 wins a season ago and six postseason appearances (3 NCAA, 2 NIT, 1 CBI)
  • Nine of the 15 teams the Runnin' Rams will face in the non-conference slate won 21 or more games
  • 10 of the 15 made postseason appearances (3 NCAA, 4 NIT, 3 CBI).
  • The average RPI (2010-11 final) for URI's non-conference opponents is 109.8.  Nine of Rhody's foes were among the top 100, three were top 50, and two (George Mason and Texas) were among the RPI's top 25 a season ago.
  • Five of Rhody's road games are in state capitals, beginning with tonight's game in Austin, Texas.  Other capital cities on the OOC schedule - Nebraska (Lincoln), Brown (Providence), Georgia State (Atlanta), and Boston College.
  • URI will play in the Nation's Capital on Jan. 11 when it travels to Washington, D.C. to take on George Washington
  • 10 different conferences are represented in Rhody's non-conference slate: America East (Boston Univ., Maine); ACC (Boston College, Va. Tech); Atlantic Sun (Stetson); Big Ten (Nebraska); Big 12 (Texas); Big East (Providence); CAA (George Mason, Hofstra, Georgia State, James Madison); Conference USA (UCF); Horizon (Cleveland State); Ivy (Brown, Yale)
  • This year marks the first time that the Rams have played three true road games to start a season since the 1992-93 season.  That year, URI opened at Fordham, Eastern Michigan, and Providence en route to a 19-win season a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

RHODY RELEASES RECORD TELEVISION SCHEDULE FOR 2011-12

  • Rhode Island will make a record 23 regular season television appearances - including all 15 home games - during the 2011-12 season.
  • It is the most comprehensive television slate in program history and ranks second behind Xavier for the most TV games in the Atlantic 10 this year.
  • Cox Sports - the exclusive home of Runnin' Rams basketball - will produce and air 13 of the Runnin' Rams games.
  • All games produced and aired by Cox can also be seen live on the web via Cox Sports Online.
  • The Runnin' Rams will make six national television appearances: at Texas (ESPN), at Nebraska (Big Ten Network), at Boston College (ESPN3), Richmond (CBS Sports), Temple (ESPN), at Xavier (CBS Sports)

NEXT UP:  HOFSTRA (NOV. 25) - TICKETCITY LEGENDS CLASSIC

  • Rhody will open up its 2011-12 home slate on Friday, Nov. 25 when it hosts Hofstra in the first of three consecutive games at in the TicketCity Legends Classic sub-regional round
  • The game against the Pride can be seen live on Cox Sports Television beginning at 5 p.m. ET, with Mike Rubin and Chris DiSano providing the broadcast call.  The first game - Cleveland State vs. Boston University - is set to tip at 2:30 p.m.
