CONWAY, S.C. - The Rhode Island softball team (0-9) came up short twice on Saturday as it fell 6-2 to Boston College and 10-2 (five innings) versus Virginia Tech in the second day of the Coastal Carolina Tournament.
In its opener against Boston College, Rhody fell behind 3-0 in the early going after the Eagles plated two runs in the first and one in the second frame.
The Rams got on the board in the bottom half of the fourth following an RBI single by freshman Jocelyn Mattison, which plated classmate Fallon Scorpio. Mattison finished the game with a team-best three hits.
Boston College opened up a 5-1 lead in the sixth as it scored two more runs. The Eagles added another run in the seventh to make the count 6-1. In the bottom half of the frame, Mattison crossed home to give the Rams their second run of the game, but that was as close they would get.
Junior pitcher Alison Hartzell took the loss and fell to 0-5 on the year. Hartzell worked 7.0 innings and allowed just three earned runs. URI committed four errors in its first game.
In the second game against Virginia Tech, Rhody started off fast as sophomore Erika Szymanski drilled a two-out single to second base, which scored junior Courtney Prendergast from second and freshman Charlotte Conaway from third to give Rhody a 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning.
Virginia Tech took the lead in the bottom half of the second as it plated three runs. The Hokies added two more runs in the third to make the count 5-0. Virginia Tech broke the game wide open as it scored five runs on six hits to take a 10-2 advantage.
Rhody was unable to score a run in the fifth as the Hokies secured the victory.
Freshman Sam Bedore suffered the loss and dropped to 0-3 on the year. Bedore worked 1.2 innings and gave up just three earned runs.
The Rams wrap-up play in the Coastal Carolina Tournament on Sunday as they take on Boston College. First pitch is set for 10 a.m.
