PHILADELPHIA -- Delroy James scored a game-high 27 points and Marquis Jones added 18 as Rhode Island dropped an 80-67 decision at Temple on Saturday afternoon.
James was 10-of-18 from the floor and 7-of-10 from the charity stripe, while also tallying six rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot in 38 minutes of action.` Jones connected on 7-of-12 from the floor - including 4-of-5 from 3-point land - to go along with two rebounds and three steals in 39 minutes.
Rhody got out to a quick 6-0 lead, thanks to two Akeem Richmond 3-pointers. But Temple would call a quick timeout and respond, rattling off 14 unanswered points over the next 4:32. James would end the run with a fast break dunk at the 13:38 mark, before Jones would add a 3-pointer, making it 14-11, Owls, with 12:58 left in the half.
After Temple made it 30-22 with just under five minutes left in the period, the Rams tallied five straight points, capped by a free throw from Will Martell, which again trimmed the Temple lead to just three - at 30-27 with 2:21 left. Rhody would enter halftime trailing by six points, at 36-30.
In the second half, Jones' hot hand from the outside kept them pushing for the lead. Twice he knocked down jumpers which cut it to three, including a 3-pointer wiht 14:15 left in regulation which made it 45-42. But that was as close as Rhode Island would get. The Owls began an 23-9 run over the next 10:00, which gave them their largest lead of the afternoon - 17 points - at 65-48 with 6:06 to play.
Beginning with a layup with 5:12 left, James scored Rhode Island's next 14 points, getting the Rams within 10 late - 72-62 with 1:56 to play.
Richmond ended with nine points, while Jamal Wilson added five points and three rebounds off the bench.
Rhode Island returns to action on Feb. 9 when they host Dayton in the Fifth Annual Pink Out game presented by South County Hospital. All proceeds from the game will go to the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation.
