GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Rhode Island junior
Mike LeBel had two hits and accounted for all but one of URI's runs as the Rams fell to No. 1 Florida, 12-4, on Saturday evening. LeBel scored once and drove in two runs while senior
Tom Coulombe crossed the plate twice for Rhody.
As a team, Rhode Island committed a season-high six errors in the loss - which resulted in Florida scoring six unearned runs.
UF jumped out to an early lead after a two-run homer by Preston Tucker in the bottom of the first but Rhody came back and cut the lead in half in the top of the second.
Coulombe got things started with a lead-off bunt single to third and eventually came around to score on redshirt junior Greg Annarummo's second triple of the season. However, the Rams were unable to push Annarummo across and even the score as back-to-back strikeouts by juniors Milan Adams and Dan Haverstick ended the inning with the tying run on third.
Florida then opened it up in the bottom of the frame - plating seven runs on seven hits with four Rhode Island errors - to move in front 9-1.
The Rams got a pair back in the top of the fourth as Coulombe reached on an error before being driven in on a triple to left center by LeBel. Adams then singled through the right side to plate LeBel and make it a 9-3 game.
Senior starter Ken Graveline retired the next six batters before freshman Kevin Lee took the hill in the bottom of the sixth. Graveline - who was charged with the loss - finished the day with nine runs (four earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts.
Lee gave up a pair of runs on the bottom of the seventh before sophomore Kevin Stenhouse single to right and was driven in on a two-out single by LeBel in the top of the eighth. However, the Rams were unable to get any closer as UF scored again in the bottom of the eighth to grab the 12-4 win.
Redshirt junior Jeff Cammans - who had recorded a hit in each of the Rams' last 10 games - saw his streak come to an end in the first inning when what would have likely been a double down the left field line was blocked by the third base umpire, allowing Florida third baseman Zac Powers to grab the ball and throw Cammans out at first in his only at-bat of the game.
Hudson Randall earned the win for the Gators, who improve to 13-2 overall. Rhody meanwhile, drops to 7-5 on the season.
Rhode Island and Florida return to McKethan Stadium to close out the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
