KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island softball team (4-35) fell twice to Boston University (23-12) as it was defeated 9-2 in game one and 7-4 in eight innings in the second game.
Boston University used a good combination of both pitching and offense as it knocked off Rhody in game one by a score of 9-2. Terriers starter Erin Schuppert went all seven innings and alowed just two runs on six hits, while striking out five. On the offensive side of the ball, BU scored a run in every inning but the fourth and the seventh.
Freshman Fallon Scorpio continued her power hitting of late as she hit another home run in the sixth inning to finish 1-for-3. Jhokania De Los Santos got Rhody on the board in the bottom of the second inning as her RBI single scored Jocelyn Mattison after she doubled.
Through most of the second game it was all about the pitching as the bats for both sides would stay quite as no runs crossed the plate through the first six innings. Rams starter Alison Hartzell throw five shutout innings and game up just five hits and one walk to go along with one strikeout.
Boston University would finally get on the board first as they scored four runs on five hits - all with two outs, as they took a 4-0 lead over Rhody heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.
After Mattison scored on an RBI double by Stacey Fox to cut the lead to 4-1, Nicole Massoni came to the plate as the tying run and hit a dramatic three-run homerun over the right centerfield wall to tie the game at 4-4 and send it into extras.
In the eighth inning, BU was able to score three runs on three in the top half of the inning before retiring the Rhody hitters in order in the bottom half of the inning to take game two by a score of 7-4 in eight innings.
Rhode Island will be back in action on Sunday as they head to Dayton, Ohio to take on Flyers for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
