PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island softball team (5-40) scored a season-high 18 runs in game two against Brown to claim an 18-9 victory (five innings). With the win, URI earned a series split with the in-state rival Bears Thursday afternoon at the Erickson Athletic Complex.
URI's 18-run output marked the third time this year it has scored 10-or-more runs in a game.
Rhody dropped the opener 8-4 as it was outhit 10-5. Brown opened up a 6-0 lead after six innings and never looked back.
The Rams got on the board in the fifth as junior Alison Hartzell scored all the way from second base following an error by the catcher. The Bears responded in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of runs.
Rhody added three runs in the top half of the seventh, but that was as close as it would get. Junior Jayshree Narendran suffered the loss after she worked 5.0 innings, allowing seven earned runs.
In the second game, Rhody fell behind early as Brown plated three runs in the first, but URI fought back and outscored the Bears 8-1 over the next two innings to open up an 8-4 lead. The Rams scored one run in the second and seven in the third inning. Freshman Fallon Scorpio and junior Ashley Hutchins each drove in a pair of runs to highlight the third inning.
In the fourth and fifth innings URI went on to score 10 runs to secure the win in five innings. Rhody's five-inning victory was its first of the year.
Sophomore Kelly Coker led the Rams with three RBI, while freshman Jocelyn Mattison scored a team-best four runs and collect a pair of hits.
Freshman Sam Bedore picked up the win after she worked 3.2 innings, allowing just three earned runs.
Rhody returns to action on Friday as it steps back into Atlantic 10 play with a doubleheader against George Washington. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the URI Softball Complex.
