HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. -- Rhode Island played its best golf during the third and final round of the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship, held at the Mission Inn Resort (par 72; 6,901 yards).
The Rams closed out the three-day, 54-hole tournament in fifth place overall as a team, with a total of 928 strokes for the tournament (312-317-299).
Tom Drennan was named the 2011 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, closing out his Hall of Fame career this season. It marked the third time he has earned top conference coaching honors.
Patrick Pelletier played his way onto the 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Conference team. The senior carded a his second consecutive 1-over round of 73 during Sunday's final round. Pelletier finished in a tie for 12th place, with a three-day total of 227 (81-73-73).
John Kelly closed out his Rhody career with a third round, 2-over score of 74. His solid play on Sunday helped him to a tie for 16th place. The E. Longmeadow, Mass. native finished with a score of 229, after registering an opening round score of 75 and a second round 80.
David Gosselin, playing in his first Atlantic 10 Championship tournament, finished in a tie for 27th place. The sophomore had his best score of the weekend, shooting a 77 during Sunday's final round. He finished with a total of 237 (79-81-77).
Taylor Fontaine finished in 30th place, a stroke behind Gosselin with a score of 238 (77-84-77). The junior carded a final round 77 to close out A-10 play. Andrew Fiorenzano, also making his first A-10 Championship appearance, carded a final round score of 75. He finished in a tie for 38th place (84-83-75=242), rounding out the Rhody golfers.
Charlotte won its sixth straight A-10 team title, with a score of 881. Xavier's Herbert Day took individual medalist honors with a score of 214 (70-72-72), defeating Richmond's Nick Austin in a two-hole playoff.
