DAYTON, Ohio - The Rhode Island baseball team fell to Dayton, 13-2, on Thursday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Stadium. The 11-point defeat marks the Rams' first double-digit loss of the season.
Freshman Jeff Roy finished with two doubles on the day while, as a team, the Rams recorded just six hits - their lowest team total since finishing with five at Richmond on April 22.
Dayton (28-23, 14-8), meanwhile, scored in all but one inning and cranked out 14 hits - the most the URI pitching staff has allowed since giving up 17 at fourth-ranked South Carolina on March 23.
The Rams (29-19, 15-7) found themselves down early on as Dayton's C.J. Gillman homered in the first before the Flyers added two more in the second and another in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
A sacrifice fly by junior Mike LeBel plated senior Tom Coulombe in the top of the fourth but UD went on to score another three runs before Rhody would get on the board again - when redshirt junior Dan Haverstick crossed the plate on Roy's seventh-inning RBI double.
However, Dayton came back with a five spot in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 12-2 game before tacking on another run in the bottom of the eighth for the 13-2 win.
Burny Mitchem earned the W for Dayton, striking out 10 Rhode Island batters and allowing just one earned run over eight complete innings. Rhody junior Anthony Pisani was charged with the loss as he have up four runs (three earned) in 3.0 innings of work.
The Rams and Flyers return to the diamond tomorrow at 1 p.m. One win against UD would guarantee Rhode Island a first-round bye at next weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship, while two wins over Dayton would give the Rams a share of the league's regular season title.
