Rhody Heads to Brown for Saturday Night Governor's Cup Game

KINGSTON, R.I.-- On Saturday night, Rhode Island travels to Brown Stadium for the 96th meeting all-time and 30th Governor's Cup matchup against in-state rival Brown.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in the first night game between the two schools. The game can also be seen live on myRITV (Cox: 811/1015 HD), with Eric Murphy and Andy Gresh providing the broadcast call.


RHODE ISLAND VS. BROWN - ALL-TIME SERIES Rhode Island and Brown have met 95 times, with the Bears holding a 67-26-2 all-time series advantage dating back to 1909. Since 1981, the two teams have participated for the annual Governor's Cup. Last season, Rhody regained the Cup with a 27-24 overtime victory at Meade Stadium on Oct. 2, 2010. The Rams are 18-62-2 all-time at Brown Stadium. Brown is URI's most common opponent, all-time.

RHODE ISLAND VS. BROWN - THE GOVERNOR'S CUP Since the 1981 season, Rhode Island and Brown have met for the annual Governor's Cup. This year marks the 30th Governor's Cup game. The Rams' all-time record in the unofficial State Championship game is 16-13, including an 8-5 mark at Meade Stadium and 8-8 record at Brown Stadium.

THREE FOR 100 Against Fordham on Sept. 24, Rhode Island had three players - Anthony Baskerville (119), Travis Hurd (112), and Deontray Johnson (107) rush for over 100 yards. It marked the first time three Rhody players passed the 100-yard mark on the ground since Sept. 29, 2007, when Derek Cassidy (119), Jimmy Hughes (119) and Jerell Jones (117) did so at Brown.

HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLE Senior Anthony Baskerville has had an exceptional start to the 2011 season. The 5-11, 189 lb. wide receiver ranks second in CAA Football in receiving yards per game, averaging 95.0. He is also fourth in the league in receptions per game (5.33), and seventh in all-purpose yardage (143.3). Over the past two weeks, the Newark, N.J. native set a new single-game highs with 134 receiving yards at UMass on Sept. 17 and 119 rushing yards vs. Fordham on Sept. 24.

JOHNSON AT A LOSS Junior linebacker Doug Johnson leads CAA Football in tackles for loss, averaging 2.33 per game. Against UMass on Sept. 17, the Warwick, R.I. native made five TFL for a loss of 22 yards. Johnson is also tied for the conference lead in sacks, averaging 1.0 per game. His first interception of the season sealed URI's victory last week vs. Fordham.

DULANY DOING IT ON D Senior safety Darrell Dulany made a single-game career high 13 tackles at UMass. His previous high was nine, set the week before at Syracuse. He ranks 10th among all defensive players - and tied for second among defensive backs - in tackles, averaging 8.7 per game.

ZOCCO TACKLING STRONG Sophomore safety Dave Zocco has been a consistent force on the Rhody defense in 2011. Through three games, Zocco posted eight tackles at Syracuse, eight at UMass and a career-best nine vs. Fordham. Included in his nine tackles vs. Fordham were eight solo stops and two sacks.

HAVE YOU HURD? Travis Hurd - a 2010 All-CAA Football First Teamer as a returner - scored his first rushing touchdown at Syracuse to open the season. He added two more - including the gamewinning score with 1:13 left in the fourth quarter vs. Fordham. The Branford, Conn. native ranks sixth in kick return average (21.0 yards) and eighth in CAA Football in rushing (60.7 yards per game).

PROBST BLUE RIBBON Following a year where he set single season career highs in virtuallly every passing category, quarterback Steve Probst continues to set new career marks in 2011. At UMass on Sept. 17, Probst set new career-bests in passing (279 yards), passing TD's (4), and longest reception (83). He completed TD passes to Brandon Johnson-Farrell (18 yards), Ty Bynum (39), Billy Morgan (48) and Anthony Baskerville (83).

TRAINER ANNOUNCES 2011 TEAM CAPTAINS Prior to the Sept. 10 season opener at Syracuse, head coach Joe Trainer announced his six team captains - offensive linemen Kyle Bogumil and Jason Foster, defensive back Darrell Dulany, quarterback Steve Probst, and defensive tackles Matt Rae and Willie McGinnis. “These six senior captains represent the best leadership we have had since I have been here and I am confident this group will effectively lead this team in 2011,” Trainer said. “I couldn't be happier with our entire senior class and what they bring to this team.”

BIG WILLIE STYLE Senior Willie McGinnis registered two tackles for a loss at Syracuse. He ranked second on the Rams in TFL last year, with 10.5 and now has 23.5 for his career.

PROBST AND HURD SELECTED TO 2011 CAA FOOTBALL PRESEASON ALL-LEAGUE TEAM Senior quarterback Steve Probst and sophomore kick returner Travis Hurd were each selected to the 2011 CAA Football Preseason All-League Team. The selections were voted on by the league's 11 head coaches and media relations personnel.

RAMS WELL REPRESENTED ON THE PHIL STEELE ALL-CAA PRESEASON SQUAD Five Rhode Island football players were selected to the Phil Steele Preseason All-CAA Team as part of its 2011 FCS Preview. Senior offensive lineman Jason Foster and sophomore kick returner Travis Hurd were named First Team. Earning Second Team honors for Rhody were seniors Kyle Bogumil (offensive lineman), Willie McGinnis (defensive lineman), and Matt Rae (defensive lineman).

ROAD ISLAND For the first time since 1982, URI started a season with back-to-back road games. That season, the Rams played their first three contests away from Meade Stadium.

GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM This past year 13 players were selected to the CAA Football All-Academic team. In two years, the Rams have placed 23 players on the team - a number that ranks third in CAA Football during that period.

NEXT UP: OLD DOMINION (OCT. 7) Rhode Island hosts new CAA Football member Old Dominion at Meade Stadium in a 1 p.m. matchup on Saturday, Oct. 7.
