Box Score 2 Setting the Scene
Rhode Island (16-19) swept in-state rival Brown with a pair of walk-off victories Wednesday to notch the team's first three-game winning streak of the season. The Rams won the opening game 2-1 and then ended the second game with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 10-1 victory.
How It Happened
Brown (6-18) had the upper hand for most of Game 1, as starting pitcher Denise van der Goot limited the Rams to a pair of Brittany Julich singles through the first six innings. However, senior Courtney Prendergast homered to lead off the bottom of the seventh to tie the score. Nicole Massoni followed with a single, and sophomore Melissa Parente came on as a pinch runner.
Parente advanced to second on a wild pitch, and after one out, moved to third on a passed ball. Sophomore Stacey Fox delivered a line drive single to right center to drive Parente in with the winning run.
In Game 2, Rhode Island led 3-1 before erupting for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game due to the eight-run mercy rule. Junior Kelly Coker clubbed a three-run home run to end the game 10-1 in favor of Rhode Island.
