Box Score HOW IT HAPPENED
Vermont (1-0-0) scored the lone goal of the game in the 18th minute when Scott Kisling netted a header off a long throw-in from Sean Sweeney in the season opener for both teams.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Rhode Island (0-1-0) managed four shots on goal, and seven shots overall. Sophomore Matt Sykes had two shots on target, but Vermont keeper Dave Ramada was able to turn both away.
- Five Rams made their debuts in a Rhody uniform. Freshman Mikey Welsh and graduate student Brett Uttley were both in the starting lineup, while freshmen Oscar Soons and Mike Discavage came on as subs.
- Junior Adam Blanchard made four saves in net.
- Rhode Island managed just one corner kick in each half. Vermont had four on the day, three of which came in the first 45 minutes.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- The game was the first ever held at Vermont's Virtue Field
- The Catamoutns played the entire second half down a man as Sweeney was red-carded in the closing seconds of the first half.
- This was the first time Rhode Island had lost at Vermont since 1985, a stretch that covered four matches.

Rhode Island plays at in-state rival Brown on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. in an opening round game of the Ocean State Soccer Classic. The championship and consolation matches of the Classic will be hosted at URI on Monday, Sept. 3 with times and matchups to be determined.
