Rhody Drops 2-1 Decision at Holy Cross

How It Happened:
Holy Cross struck first, talking a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute when Luke Melody scored off a pass from Josh Cintas. However, Rhode Island knotted the score just before the break on an Andy Hess goal that was set up by Alan Hernandez at 42:49. Cintas then netted the game-winner, in the 80th minute, when he scored from 12 yards out on a setup by Kevin O'Connell.

Inside the Box Score:

  • With the loss, Rhode Island drops to 0-4-2 on the season while Holy Cross improves to 1-4-0.
  • Holy Cross held a 19-14 advantage in total shots and a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Crusaders also out-cornered the Rams, 8-1.
  • Holy Cross committed 10 fouls to URI's eight. 
  • Holy Cross was whistled offsides six times while the Rams were twice.
  • Thomas Spenser finished with a season-high eight saves for the Rams, before being replaced by Adam Blanchard in the 85th minute. Michael Thompson turned away six shots for the Crusaders.
  • Hess led URI with three shots on goal while Cintas put four attempts on net for the Crusaders.

Additional Notes:

  • Hess' goal was his first as a Ram. 
  • Hernandez also picked up his first career point when he assisted on Hess' tally.
  • Oscar Soons made his first collegiate start against the Crusaders.
  • The victory was Holy Cross' first over Rhode Island since the 1966 season. Prior to tonight's loss, the Rams had won 10 consecutive matches against the Crusaders.
  • Senior captain Robby Gargaro has not missed a game - or a start - since joining the Rams in 2009. As a freshman, he started in each of URI's 20 matches and went on to start all 18 games in both 2010 and 2011. Saturday's contest at Holy Cross extended Gargaro's streak to 62 consecutive starts.

The Rams are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 18, when they host New Hampshire at 7 p.m. The game will be televised, via tape delay, on Cox HD.
