Rams Strong Sunday Play Yields Fifth Place Finish at MacDonald Cup

Setting the Scene:

Course: Yale Golf Club – South Kent, Conn. (par 70/6,749 yards)

The field: 15 teams, 75 total golfers

Weather: low 60s, mostly cloudy

Rhode Island's Individual Results:

* Branden Chicorka tied for seventh place after firing a 1-under par 69 during Sunday's final round of play.  He finished the tournament with an even-par 36 hole total of 140 - just two shots off the individual medalist.  In three tournaments this fall, Chicorka has finished no higher than eighth place.

* Andrew Fiorenzano also finished strong on Sunday, posting an even-par 70 to finish with a two-round total of 145 and a share of 29th place.  The 70 was his lowest of the season.  He opened up play in Saturday with a day one score of 75.  

* Along side Fiorenzano in a tie for 29th place was freshman Nick Fairweather.  The newcomer posted his finest collegiate tournament result, after posting a second round 74.  Fairweather carded a 1-over par 71 - his lowest round as a collegiate golfer - during Saturday's opening 18 holes of action.

* Fellow newcomer Mat Goldman also enjoyed his best tourney play of his young career.  He matched his lowest collegiate round on Sunday, posting a second straight 74.  He finished tied for 39th place overall.

* Jared Adams bounced back on Sunday with a score of 75, helping him to a tie for 63rd place.  He opened with with a first round 78.  

* Notre Dame's Niall Platt took individual medalist honors, posting a two-day score of 138.  Platt opened with a 2-under 68 before closing out on Sunday with an even-par 70.  There was a four-way tie for second place.

Rhode Island Team Results:

* The Rams posted their lowest team score of the season - 287 - during Sunday's final round.  Over the 36 hole tournament, URI compiled a score of 578.  A tightly packed leaderboard, just 14 strokes separate the top seven teams.

Rhode Island travels to the Ellington Ridge G.C. in Ellington, Conn. to compete in The Connecticut Cup from Oct. 8-9.
