SETTING THE SCENE
For the first time in 10 years, Rhode Island (9-19) blanked an opponent in both ends of a doubleheader, as the Rams beat in-state rival Brown (7-18) 2-0 and 4-0 Tuesday.
Pitchers Erika Szymanski and Sam Bedore had matching three-hit shutouts. The last time Rhody shut out an opponent in both games of a doubleheader was April 27, 2003, when the Rams beat St. Bonaventure 3-0 and 4-0.
In the opener, Szymanski (4-6) hurled a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits over eight innings. She fanned a career-high eight batters while walking just one. It was her third career complete-game shutout. Szymanski has been a part of two other shutouts in her career.
Bedore (5-8) was equally strong in the second game. She allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out four batters. It was the first time Rhode Island has had back-to-back shutouts since the 2008 season, when it beat Hartford 4-0 on March 28 and Dayton 8-0 on April 1.
