Rhody Blanked by Texas Tech, No-Hit by Abilene Christian

How it Happened
Rhode Island (0-5) dropped its first two games at the Texas Tech Invitational. The Rams were blanked by the host Red Raiders 5-0 and then lost to Abilene Christian, 6-1, in the second game.

In the opener, Texas Tech (11-6) took an early lead, getting a run in the bottom of the first inning. The game stayed close until the Red Raiders broke things open in the bottom of the fourth with a four-run inning. The big hit was a three-run home run by Ashley Fultz.

In the second game, Abilene Christian (4-10) took control in the first inning, scoring four unearned runs on six hits and a Rhody error. The Southland Conference school added single runs in the second and third innings, then added three in the bottom of the fourth to clinch the win.


Inside the Box Score

  • Sophomore Emily Hendricks had a two-hit game against Texas Tech, singling twice. Hendricks now has a team-high three hits on the year.
  • Freshman Jenna Cubello picked up her first career hit with a single against the Red Raiders. Cubello also reached base against Abilene Christian when she was hit by a pitch.
  • Senior Amy Gleason and sophomore Lauren Klepchick each made their first start of the season against Texas Tech. Gleason was the designated player, while Klepchick started at third base.
  • Freshman Ashley Dumoulin made her second career start in the first game. She started out well, allowing just one run on one hit through three innings before the Red Raiders broke through for four runs in the fourth inning.
  • Senior catcher Stacey Fox threw out her third would-be base stealer of the season in the opener.
  • Senior Sam Bedore pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless innings against Texas Tech. She struck out two batters, giving her 254 for her career, tying her with Susan Chymbor (1997-2000) for fifth place in school history.
  • Senior Jocelyn Mattison scored the first run of the season for Rhode Island in the top of the second inning against Abilene Christian. She reached on an error on the left fielder and came around to score on the same on a throwing error by the centerfielder.

Stat of the Day
29.2 –
Dating back to the season finale of 2013, Rhode Island had gone 29.2 innings without scoring a run before Jocelyn Mattison's run against Abilene Christian. The longest scoring drought in team history came in the 2000-01 seasons, when the Rams were blanked in seven straight games. Rhody was blanked by Harvard and twice by Massachusetts to end 2000, and opened 2001 with shutout losses to Tennessee, North Carolina, Illinois and Miami (Ohio).

The Rams are back in action against the same two teams Saturday, March 1. Rhody will play Abilene Christian at 12:30 p.m. CST and then go against Texas Tech at 3 p.m. CST.
