Box Score 2 How it Happened
Rhode Island (1-6) rallied from a three-run deficit to get its first victory of the season, a 5-3 win over Abilene Christian Saturday. The Rams also fell, 12-1, to Texas Tech.
In the opener, Abilene Christian (4-12) scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie. The Rams got one run back in the bottom of the frame. Senior Jocelyn Mattison started the rally with a single. Junior Jenna Newborn followed with a sacrifice bunt and was safe on an error. Freshman Ali Summers singled to drive in Mattison and put runners on the corners. Junior Megan Congro singled to plate pinch runner Olivia Hendricks.
After a sacrifice bunt by Jenna Cubello put two runners in scoring position with one out, Marylynn Muldowney delivered a two-run single to give the Rams their first lead of the season. Senior Sam Bedore (1-0) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick for the Rams.
In the second game for Rhode Island, Texas Tech (12-6) powered by the Rams quickly, scoring 10 runs in the first inning en route to a 12-1 win. Cassie McClure homered twice and Kierra Miles added a blast of her own during the Texas Tech outburst.
Inside the Box Score:
- Senior Stacey Fox had a big day at the plate for Rhode Island. In six plate appearances, Fox was 3-for-4 with one walk and a sacrifice bunt. She also scored once and drove in one run.
- Freshman Marylynn Muldowney had two hits and two runs batted in against Abilene Christian. The two RBI were the first of her career.
- Senior Cassie Baker pitched three scoreless innings of relief against Texas Tech. Baker has yet to allow a run in three appearances this season.
- Senior Jocelyn Mattison had two hits on the day, including the 100th hit of her career.
- Junior Jenna Newborn delivered two of Rhode Island's four sacrifice hits in the Abilene Christian game. Newborn had two sacrifice hits in her career before Saturday.
- Freshman Ali Summers made her first career appearance against Abilene Christian, delivering an RBI single in her first at bat.
