Late Rally Not Quite Enough as Rams Fall at BU, 7-4

How it Happened
Despite entering the top of the seventh facing a six-run deficit, Rhode Island (11-29) got the potential tying run into the on-deck circle before falling 7-4 at Boston University Tuesday.

Seniors Jocelyn Mattison and Amy Gleason led off the seventh with back-to-back doubles. Mattison scored on Gleason's hit. With one out, Olivia Hendricks delivered Gleason with an RBI single. Freshman Danielle Gariglio was hit by a pitch, putting the potential tying run in the on-deck circle.

Stacey Fox reached on a fielder's choice, and an error on the play enable Hendricks to score. A groundout ended the rally and the game.

Boston University (25-18) jumped out to a quick lead, as four of the first six Terrier batters scored in the bottom of the first. BU added two more in the second inning, but Caitlin Kennedy settled down from there, allowing one run on two hits over her final four-plus innings of work.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Sophomore Olivia Hendricks singled twice, scored one run and drove in one run.
  • Senior Jocelyn Mattison doubled, singled and scored once. She also had eight putouts.
  • Senior Amy Gleason doubled, scored one run and drove in one run. Of her four hits this season, three are doubles.
  • Junior Megan Congro singled, scored and had a sacrifice bunt. It was her ninth sacrifice of the season, which ties her for the third most in a single season in program history. She is tied for ninth in school history with 15 for her career.
  • Freshman Danielle Gariglio singled and drove in one run.
  • Senior Stacey Fox singled and also threw out a would-be base stealer.


Stat of the Day
12 – Due to class schedules, injuries and illnesses, Rhode Island traveled to Boston with just 12 players.

What's Next

Rhode Island hosts Yale Wednesday, April 23 in its final non-conference doubleheader of the season. The first game begins at 3 p.m.
