KINGSTON, R.I. –Rhode Island (1-8, 1-5 in CAA Football) looks to win its final home game of 2015 when it hosts Stony Brook (3-5, 1-5 in CAA Football) Saturday at Meade Stadium with a 12:30 p.m. kickoff. The Rams struggles offensively last Saturday led to a disappointing 24-3 loss against Villanova. Meanwhile, Stony Brook looks to continue its winning ways following a 14-9 non-conference victory over Howard. Here are three things to look for during this Saturday's game:
RHODY CORNERS VERSUS STONY BROOK'S RAY BOLDEN
When the Stony Brook offense takes the field for the first time this Saturday, the top priority for the Ram defense will be to find No. 13, Stony Brook wide receiver Ray Bolden. Bolden, who stands at 5-9 and 165 pounds, can be characterized as quick and shifty and will line-up both on the outside and in the slot. Heading into Saturday's game, Bolden leads all receivers during CAA Football conference play in receptions (45), and is second in yards (495) and touchdowns (4).
A Rams pass defense that ranks eighth in pass defense during league play (194 yards per game through the air) will need cornerbacks like Myles Holmes, Ahkema Evans, and Isaiah Hill to bring their best game come Saturday.
RUNNING BACK HAROLD COOPER
Rams running back Harold Cooper should see 25-plus touches this Saturday against Stony Brook. While the offense for the Rams struggled during much of the game last week against Villanova, Cooper only had 13 total touches (12 rushing, 1 kick return). Villanova's stingy defense allowed them to get out in front and take a commanding lead early, forcing the Rams to rely more heavily on the quarterbacks and essentially abandon Cooper and the running game, leading to turnovers and mistakes on offense.
However, Saturday's game against Stony Brook consists of two very similarly matched teams on paper. It would be hard to imagine Stony Brook getting a commanding lead early. This should allow the Rams offense to stick with its strength, which is feeding Cooper the ball both on the ground and through the air. Rhode Island can very well come out of this Saturday's game victorious if it can set the tempo on offense and play through Harold Cooper.
EXPECT A LOW SCORING GAME
Rhode Island and Stony Brook enter Saturday's game ranked at or near the bottom of every major offensive category during CAA Football conference play. Both teams have struggled on the money downs, and both teams are at the bottom of the league in third-down conversions. With both sides still working to hit on big plays on offense, expect the game this Saturday to be close and low-scoring.
