Rhode Island Heads to Pawtucket for 43rd Annual Governor's Cup

RHODE ISLAND vs. BROWN - SERIES NOTES

  • Rhode Island and Brown will meet for the 109th time on Friday evening. The first meeting between the Rams and Bears was Sept. 29, 1909. The Bears defeated the Rams 6-0 in Providence. 
  • Though Brown leads the series 73-33-2, Rhode Island has more Governor's Cup victories (23-19) since the introduction of the trophy in 1981.
  • Rhody has faced Brown 108 times, making Brown the Rams most common opponent in program history.
  • Rhode Island topped Brown 31-21 at Meade Stadium in last year's meeting on Oct. 12, 2024.
  • Brown took a 21-14 lead on Rhode Island with 9:02 left in the third quarter after a one-yard Qwentin Brown touchdown run. From that point, the Rams would go on to outscore the Bears 17-0 over the final 24 minutes of game play. 
  • Wide receiver Marquis Buchanan had game highs in receptions (9) and yards (107) while adding a touchdown catch. Rams quarterback Devin Farrell added 244 passing yards and a career-high 65 rushing yards the the win. 

THE 43RD GOVERNOR'S CUP

  • The 43rd Governor's Cup will take place at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I. Despite the nuetral field, the game is recognized as a home game for Brown. 
  • Rhode Island has won the last six meetings against the Bears, the longest streak from either program during the series history. 
  • Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee will be in attendance to present the trophy to the winning team. 
  • Twenty-two Rams are natives of the Ocean State. Nine hail from Providence. Three call Pawtucket home including defensive backs Andre DePina-Gray and Ethan McCann-Carter, and linebacker Moses Meus. All three Pawtucket-born Rams played high school football at Saint Raphael Academy (Saint Rays). Centreville Bank Stadium is just a mile and a half from Saint Rays.

BUCHANAN, PENA SHINE IN GOVERNOR'S CUP

  • Both wide receiver Marquis Buchanan and and linebacker A.J. Pena have impressed in their previous Governor's Cup performances.
  • In two career games against Brown, Buchanan has recorded 14 receptions, 191 yards, and two touchdowns. 
  • Pena, who has faced Brown three times, has 18 career tackles, four tackles for loss, and a sack against the Bears.
