How it Happened
Rhode Island dropped a 67-61 battle at North Dakota Friday afternoon. The Rams climbed back from a 20-point deficit in the second half to get within three points, but ran out of time for their first loss of the season.
North Dakota (2-1) took advantage of Rhody's miscues early, jumping ahead 10-4 at the first media timeout (4:47) after back-to-back 3-pointers. Rhody managed just one field goal in the remainder of the quarter, trailing 14-6 by the end of the first.
The Fighting Hawks built their lead to as many as 20 points five minutes into the second period (26-6). The Rams (2-1) ended their scoring drought by scoring eight straight points off 3-pointers from Brazil Harvey-Carr and Erin Jones followed by a Kassondra Brown jumper (26-14). Rhody went into the half down 30-19.
In the third period, Rhode Island started its climb back after a Maia Moffitt 3-ball trimmed the advantage to seven (38-31). North Dakota went on a 14-12 run capped by a successful trip to the charity stripe to go into the final quarter of play up 52-43.
Marta Vargas made a 3-pointer in the opening minute of the fourth to cut the Fighting Hawks lead to six. North Dakota had answers for Rhody's points, keeping the Rams at a comfortable distance until a Jones jumper made the Fighting Hawks lead five points with three minutes remaining. A trey by Brown followed by two good free throws by the freshman made it 64-61, but it wasn't enough as time ran out and the Fighting Hawks scored their final three points at the free throw line.
