Late Rally Spurs Maine Past Rhode Island, 34-30

Box Score

How It Happened
It was another unlikely defeat, as Rhode Island was outscored 21-3 over the final 8:24 in a 34-30 loss at Maine Saturday.

Rhode Island (2-9, 0-7 CAA Football) led 27-13 when C.J. Carrick hit a 38-yard field goal with 9:52 remaining. The Rams had dominated play all game, but the Black Bears (6-5, 4-3 CAA Football) surged to win its fourth straight league game.

Even when Emmanuel Reed scored at 8:24 of the fourth on a 12-yard rush, Rhody still led 27-20. The score remained that way under the four minute mark until Maine got a 3-yard touchdown run from Jo Fitzpatrick to tie the score with 3:16 to go.

Rhode Island responded, driving to the Maine 12-yard line to set up a 29-yard Carrick field goal. The Rams reclaimed the lead, 30-27, with just 1:49 to go. The Rams pinned Maine at its own 19 on the ensuing kickoff, but the Black Bears drove 81 yards in five plays for the winning score. A 44-yard pass from Joe Fagnano to Devin Young on the first play got Maine moving. Fagnano capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Ernie Edwards for the winning score with just 34 seconds to go.
