Box Score How It Happened
In a loss that is hard to fathom, Rhode Island scored two touchdowns in a span of 37 seconds inside of two minutes to take its first lead of the night, only to see Stony Brook score the winning points on a 50-yard scramble that came on fourth-and-6.
The stunning end resulted in Stony Brook leaving Kingston with a 31-27 victory Saturday night that dropped Rhode Island to 0-4, and 0-3 in league play. The three CAA Football losses are by a combined 15 points, and all three have gone down to the final play.
Trailing 21-7 following an Isaiah White touchdown for Stony Brook (3-1, 1-0 CAA) with 14:30 remaining, the Rams found life in the form of a 99-yard kick return for a score by Ahmere Dorsey. A Stony Brook field goal pushed the deficit to 24-14, which is where the score stood when Rhode Island took possession at its own 8 yard line with 6:29 to go.
Vito Priore led an 11-play, 92-yard drive that culminated in a 24-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Coulter. With just 1:41 remaining, the Rams needed an onside kick, and they executed perfectly. C.J. Carrick's kick took a high second bounce, and Coulter skied to pull the ball down at the Stony Brook 49.
Three plays later, Priore connected with Aaron Parker on a 29-yard strike to put Rhode Island up, 27-24 and send the Meade Stadium crowd into a frenzy. A missed extra point kept it a three-point game as Stony Brook took over at its own 25 with 1:00 on the clock.
The Seawolves moved the ball to their own 37 over the next three plays, then got a pass interference call set up 1st-and-10 at the Stony Brook 46. A short pass on second down put the ball at midfield, making it third-and-6 with 26 seconds left, forcing Stony Brook to use its final timeout. An incompletion made it fourth down.
On the next play, quarterback Tyquell Field scrambled to his right, found a seam and cut back across the field, going 50 yards for the winning score with just 11 seconds on the clock.
