How it Happened
Senior Nicole Jorgensen's monster performance led Rhode Island to a 49-47 victory at Saint Joseph's Wednesday night.
Jorgensen had 24 points, 19 rebounds and a big blocked shot to lead the Rams to the road victory. She scored Rhode Island's first nine points of the fourth quarter, keeping the Rams close down the stretch.
After a defensive battle all night, the final minute of action featured wild, back-and-forth counter punches. Saint Joseph's Katie Jekot converted an old-fashioned 3-point play with one minute left in regulation to give the Hawks a 45-42 lead. On Rhody's next possession, Erin Jones hit a 3-point basket in the corner and was fouled. Her four-point play put the Rams up 46-45 with 44.6 seconds to go.
The Hawks' Lula Roig scored a second-chance bucket with 38 seconds left to pull back in front, 47-46. Jorgensen was fouled under the basket with 28.1 seconds to go. She made both free throws to put Rhode Island back ahead, 48-47. Jorgensen had a blocked shot on Saint Joseph's next possession and then created a held ball on the rebound with 14.6 seconds left. The possession arrow favored Saint Joseph's. Off the inbounds pass, Jekot missed a 3-point shot, and Megan Oberg grabbed the rebound.
Oberg was fouled and made one of two free throws for a 49-47 Rhody lead. Maia Moffitt came up with a steal and was fouled with 0.9 seconds to seal the win.
