How it Happened
Rhode Island snapped an 11-game winning streak for Massachusetts, defeating the Minutewomen 69-66 Sunday afternoon. The Rams built an early lead with a dominant first half, then held off a furious late rally by UMass to secure the victory.
Brazil Harvey-Carr scored nine points and Erin Jones had six in the opening quarter as Rhode Island built a 22-9 lead after one period. URI was 9-for-16 and had seven assists, as ball movement led to several open looks for the Rams.
The second period was evenly played. Rhody struggled from the outside (0-for-7 from 3-point range), but Nicole Jorgensen and Davida Dale consistently got to the basket. Both scored six points, as the Rams maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the quarter, taking a 38-27 lead into the break.
Massachusetts battled back in the third quarter, scoring the first five points of the second half. Dale later hit a jumper for Rhody to slow the momentum and get the lead back to 10 points at 42-32. A 9-2 run for Massachusetts then cut the lead to 44-41 following a layup by Bre Hampton-Bey with 3:30 to go in the quarter. After the teams traded points, a layup by Sam Breen got UMass within two points, ending the third quarter with Rhody ahead, 47-45.
Hampton-Bey converted a three-point play to make it a one-point game, 54-53, with 6:45 to go. Seconds later, Dale was injured while grabbing a rebound, sending the Rhody point guard off the court for the first time in seven games. Jones, who was then moved to the point, hit a layup and was fouled on Rhody's first possession. The three-point play pushed the URI lead back to 57-53.
The fourth quarter featured wild back-and-forth action with both teams executing on the offensive end. Hailey Leidel hit a 3-pointer for UMass to make the score 57-56. Jones responded with another layup for the Rams, which was followed by a turnaround jumper in the lane by UMass' Sam Breen. Another basket by Breen gave UMass its first lead of the game, 60-59, with 4:24 to go.
Destiny Philoxy was fouled while making a layup. She hit the free throw, putting UMass up 63-59. Jones hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to get the Rams back within on, 63-62.
Dale returned to the game with 2:33 remaining and the Rams down by one point. After a defensive stop, Jorgensen hit two free throws with 1:49 left to get the Rams back ahead, 64-63. Rhode Island got another defensive stop a minute later, but turned the ball over with 28 seconds remainig on the clock.
With 15 seconds to go, Dale stole a pass and set Jorgensen up for a fastbreak layup. Jorgensen was fouled on the basket and made the free throw to put URI up 67-63.
The Minutewomen kept their chances alive however, as Philoxy came down the court and hit a 3-pointer to pull UMass back within one (67-66) with 2.5 seconds to go. Jones was then fouled with 1.8 seconds to go, making both to secure the 69-66 victory.
Inside the Box Score
- Senior Nicole Jorgensen registered 21 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. She was key for the Rams down the stretch, playing the final 6:45 of the game with four fouls.
- Redshirt junior Erin Jones was clutch for the Rams as well, scoring 10 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter.
- Redshirt senior Davida Dale recorded her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also dished out five assists and had one steal.
- Freshman Brazil Harvey-Carr scored 12 points for Rhody, all of which came from the perimeter. She also grabbed seven rebounds and had two assists and one steal.
- Freshman Kassondra Brown recorded six rebounds in 10 minutes off the bench.
- As a team, Rhody out-rebounded UMass 56-31.
