How it Happened
Rhode Island came up just short against a strong Davidson squad, falling 77-70 Wednesday.
A back-and-forth first quarter saw Rhode Island take a slight 14-13 edge by the end of the period. There were three lead changes and two ties in the quarter. Both teams had strong balance early, with five players scoring for each side in the first 10 minutes.
Davidson opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run to establish a 23-14 lead for the Wildcats. The visitors hit their first four shots of the quarter, including 3-pointers from Ally Welling and Cassidy Gould. Back-to-back baskets from Rhody's Meghan Oberg and Davida Dale helped slow the momentum, but Davidson opened an 11-point lead following a Sarah Konstans free throw. From there Rhody ended the half on a 7-0 run on a 3-pointer from Brazil Harvey-Carr and consecutive second-chance baskets from Oberg, getting the Rams back within four points at 35-31 at the break.
Rhody continued to chip away, eventually tying the game, 43-43, at 4:56 of the third when Oberg scored on a fastbreak layup assisted by Dale. Davidson's Katie Turner hit a 3-pointer to put Davidson back up, 46-43. Oberg scored four straight points to give URI its first lead of the half, 46-45. The teams traded baskets over the final four minutes, and the quarter ended in a 52-52 tie.
Davidson got ahead by as many as seven points, going up 65-58 with 3:48 to go. The Rams fought back again. Oberg and Kassondra Brown scored second-chance baskets on consecutive possessions to tie the score at 67-67 with 1:40 remaining.
A 3-pointer from the corner by Chloe Welch gave Davidson a 70-67 lead. Rhody's Nicole Jorgensen made it a one-point game with a layup, but the Wildcats got a putback from Adelaide Fuller to to get the points back. Dale made 1-of-2 at the line to made the score 72-70, but Welch hit two of her own free throws to make it a two-possession game. The Wildcats sealed the game at the free throw line, making three in the final minute.

- A season-best crowd of 3,037 fans attended the game for Education Day, which brought in elementary school students from throughout the state.
- Redshirt junior Meghan Oberg had her strongest game of the season, setting a career high with 12 points and matching her career best with 10 rebounds.
- It was the first career double-double for Oberg, who also had five assists and shot 5-of-7 from the floor.
- Redshirt senior Davida Dale led the Rams with 18 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
- Senior Nicole Jorgensen was the third Ram in double digits with 13 points.
- Junior Maia Moffitt had six rebounds and three steals.
- After Davidson shot 5-of-12 from from 3-point range in the first half, the Rams tightened up on defense. Rhody held the Wildcats to 2-of-13 from the perimeter in the second half.
- Davidson had a 23-8 edge in fast break points.
- Rhode Island outrebounded Davidson 45-36, with 17 of the boards coming on the offensive glass. The rebounding helped the Rams score 14 second-chance points.
