How it Happened
VCU got off to a hot start, taking a 10-4 lead after just three minutes of play, but Rhody responded with an 8-0 run to pull ahead 12-10. Brazil Harvey-Carr hit a 3-pointer that tied the score at 10-10, and followed with a steal that led to the go-ahead basket by Davida Dale. The advantage was short-lived however, as VCU ended the quarter on a 14-5 tear.
A long-range jumper from Erin Jones trimmed it to six (26-20) early in the second quarter, but the visiting Rams outscored Rhode Island 22-5 through the remainder of the period to take a commanding 48-25 lead into the break.
The second half was a much closer battle, but the early deficit was too much for Rhody overcome. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Dale and Jones got URI within 15 (63-48) with 8:29 to go in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as Rhode Island would get as VCU left the Ryan Center with the 75-54 victory.
