How it Happened
Rhode Island won a rock fight, knocking off George Mason, 47-42, Saturday afternoon.
For the ninth time in 20 games, Rhode Island held its opponent to single-digit scoring in the opening period, outscoring George Mason 12-6 through the first 10 minutes of play.
URI pushed its lead to eight (14-6) early in the second quarter but then went cold. Mason, meanwhile, reeled off a 10-0 run over the next five and a half minutes to erase the deficit and pull ahead 16-14 with 2:22 left in the half. That was as much damage as the Patriots were able to do before the break however, as a 3-point play by Kassondra Brown and a trey by Erin Jones sent the Rams to the locker room with a 20-16 advantage.
Rhody maintained the lead throughout the second half of play, pushing it to as many as nine (38-29) on a Nicole Jorgensen layup with 9:00 remaining in regulation. The Patriots chipped their way back in and got within two (42-40) with 24 seconds left to play, but Rhode Island hit its free throws down the stretch to win it 47-40.
