KINGSTON, R.I. - Former Rhode Island wide receiver Isaiah Coulter made the Houston Texans 53-man roster. NFL teams had to cut their rosters down to 53 by Saturday afternoon.
Fellow former Rams Aaron Parker (Dallas Cowboys), Kyle Murphy (New York Giants), David Steinmetz (the Washington Football Team) and Justin Rohrwasser (New England Patriots) were all placed on waivers by their respective teams Saturday. All are eligible to be signed as practice squad players, but they must first clear waivers, which takes 24 hours.
Coulter was the 171st player selected in April's NFL Draft. Despite missing time in training camp with a reported neck injury, he made enough of an impression to claim a roster spot. He is the first former Rhode Island player to appear on a regular-season NFL roster since Tyler Catalina did with with Washington in 2017. Catalina played in seven games, making two starts that season.
Coulter and Rohrwasser, who was taken 159th overall in this year's draft, were the first former Rhode Island players to be drafted since Bob White went to the New York Jets in the seventh round in 1986. Rohrwasser played two seasons in Kingston before transferring to Marshall.
Parker and Murphy both reportedly had strong camps and were among their teams final cuts. With the NFL expanding practice squads to 16 players per team, both have a strong chance of either landing back with their teams or getting claimed by another organization.
Steinmetz signed with Washington on Aug. 22 after a tryout. He spent 2018 on the Houston practice squad and was on injured reserve all of last season. Also among those who tried out with Washington in late August, but not signed, was former Ram Dino Boyd, who was let go by the Chicago Bears on Aug. 3.
