PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island (2-1) split a pair of matches on the first day of the Brown Invitational, falling to Boston University 5-2 before beating Villanova, 5-2, Saturday.
Freshman
Valentina Cvackova and junior
Sydney Chratian provided the points against BU. Cvackova beat Victoria Carlsten at No. 1 singles, 4-3, 1-4, 10-8. Chratian also won in a third-set super tiebreaker, beating Steph Nguyen, 1-4, 4-2, 10-7.
Sisters Erin and
Sydney Chratian clinched the doubles point against Villanova with a 6-4 win over Caitlin Fischer and Chloe Floyd. With the Wildcats not fielding a third doubles team, the Rams had an early 1-0 lead.
Rhody took four of the six singles matches.
Erin Chratian got the point at No. 5 singles when Floyd had to default the match, and URI got a free point at No. 6, where Villanova did not have a player available.
Tiara Higuchi and
Paulina Loredo won in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, for Rhode Island.
The Rams will face Massachusetts in the back draw of the bracket Sunday.
