PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Rhode Island won its third straight match, holding off Drexel 4-2 for the win Sunday afternoon.
The Rams (10-6) got two wins from
Sophie Herrman to lead the way. Herrman and
Ava Grnja teamed up for a crucial win at No. 3 doubles in a tightly contested doubles point. They won 6-4, while
Grace Darcy and
Anastasia Pettersson paired for a 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Drexel (7-7) took the No. 1 doubles match, so URI needed the two wins to earn the team point.
Herrman then went on to beat Sofiya Snitko 6-4, 6-3 for the win at No. 3 singles.
Kajsa Helgesen picked up her team-leading 13th singles win by beating Rebecca Fiedler in straight sets.
Drexel took the top two singles matches, but Rhode Island cliched the team win as
Miruna Scarlat defeated Bia Ibrahim at No. 6 singles.
"This was a great team win today against a good Drexel team," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "This was exactly what we needed, a long, physical match leading into another Atlantic 10 weekend at Davidson."
Rhode Island heads to Davidson for a pair of matches next weekend. The Rams play the Wildcats on Friday, April 3 at 11 a.m. The following day, Rhody and Richmond play a neutral-site match, also at 11 a.m.
