PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island ended the fall portion of its schedule on a high note, knocking off Massachusetts 4-3 to win the back draw championship of the Brown Invitational Sunday.
With the match tied 3-3, it came down to
Sydney Chratian's result at No. 5 singles. After dropping the opening set to Vitoria Okvyama 6-2, Chratian battled back. She took the second set 6-4 to tie the match, then clinched the individual and team victory with a closely-contested 10-7 super tiebreak in the decisive third set.
It was the singles lineup that led Rhode Island to the win. Rhody won at No. 6 singles by default, negating the point UMass won in doubles.
Valentina Cvackova swept Mariya Kraskova, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 1 singles spot.
Nadia Rajan outlasted Dylan Cannon, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 at No. 2 singles for URI's third team point, setting the stage for Chratian's heroics at No. 5 singles.
