URI 28th in STATS Top 25 Poll; Rams Named National Team of the Week

KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island is ranked No. 28 in the latest STATS Perform FCS Top 25 Poll, which was released Monday afternoon.

Coming off an overtime win at Villanova last Saturday, the Rams received 58 votes in the poll. Murray State, the No. 25 team in the latest poll, received 90 votes. The teams just in front of Rhode Island were Monmouth (71) and Idaho (60).

Rhode Island was honored as the STATS Perform National Team of the Week after opening its season with a 40-37 overtime road victory at No. 6 Villanova. It was the highest-ranked opponent that the Rams have beaten since 2010. Rhode Island is the second straight CAA Football squad to be recognized as Delaware was the National Team of the Week on March 8.

CAA Football had six teams in the Top 25: No. 1 James Madison; No. 12 Delaware;  No. 14 Villanova; No. 18 Albany; No. 20 New Hampshire and No. 23 Richmond represented the conference. In addition to Rhode Island, Maine received 26 votes, coming in 31st in the poll.

With a game Saturday at No. 18 Albany, Rhode Island has a chance to defeat nationally-ranked teams in back-to-back weeks for the first time since the 2001 season. That year, the Rams won at No. 4 Delaware on Aug. 30 then beat No. 4 Hofstra on Sept. 8. A few weeks later, URI beat No. 25 William & Mary on Oct. 13. Those three games were the only time in program history Rhode Island has won consecutive games over Top 25 teams.
