How it Happened
Rhode Island rallied late to earn a doubleheader split at Charlotte Saturday. After losing a tough pitcher's duel in the opener, 2-1, the Rams (9-6) bounced back to take the second game, 6-3.
Game 1 – Charlotte 2, Rhode Island 1 (10 Inn.)
Ryan Twitchell was superb for 8.2 innings of work, but the Rams were unable to generate much offense in the first game. Twitchell allowed just one run while scattering six hits in helping Rhode Island get to extra innings.
Rhody had two runners in scoring position with one out in the top of the 10th inning, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the scoring chance. In the bottom of the inning, Charlotte got a leadoff walk from Todd Elwood, and Carson Johnson was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved both into scoring position, and an intentional walk to David McCabe loaded the bases. Craig Keuchel drew a walk to force Elwood in with the winning run, without Charlotte ever putting a ball in play.
Game 2 – Rhode Island 6, Charlotte 3 (7 Inn.)
Trailing 3-2 after five innings, Rhode Island scored two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to earn a split for the day.
Sonny Ulliana drew a walk to start the top of the sixth, and pinch runner
Jordan Laske moved up to second when
Joe Fortin was hit by a pitch.
Addison Kopack drew a walk to load the bases. With one out,
Greg Cavaliere tied the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Laske.
Austin White followed with a single to plate Fortin and give Rhody a 4-3 lead.
Kopack provided some insurance in the top of the seventh when he delivered a two-out, two-run triple that drove in Fortin and Laske.
Zach Fernandez retired the side in the ninth inning to earn his first career save.
