How it Happened
Junior
Ryan Twitchell twirled a gem to lead Rhode Island past UMass Lowell 3-1 in the opener of a three-game series Saturday afternoon.
Twitchell pitched eight strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits to pick up his first victory of the season. He struck out six batters and needed just 97 pitches to work his way through the eighth inning.
Rhode Island (3-5) provided all the run support Twitchell needed in the fifth inning. With one out,
Max Mircovich was hit by a pitch, and
Austin White followed with a single. A wild pitch advanced both runners before
Josh Brodeur singled to left field to drive in Mircovich. Brodeur moved to second on the throw.
Jordan Laske singled in White to put the Rams in front for the first time, 2-1.
Xavier Vargas followed with an RBI groundout to provide an insurance run.
After the third inning, UMass Lowell only got one runner into scoring position, which came on a two-out triple in the top of the sixth. A lazy fly out ended that threat, and the River Hawks (0-4) were unable to mount a comeback.
