How It Happened
Rhode Island sophomore
Nadia Rajan rallied for a three-set victory at No. 1 singles to clinch the team win as the Rams beat Bryant, 4-3, Saturday night at the international Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I.
After the visiting Bulldogs took the doubles points, senior
Rachel Smilansky evened the team score for Rhody with a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles. She was followed closely by junior
Sydney Chratian's win at No. 6 singles. Between the two of them, Smilansky and Chratian gave up just three points while securing team points.
Redshirt senior
Tiara Higuchi picked up the win at No. 4 singles with her 6-2, 6-4 victory. Her win put the Rams one win from securing the match.
Each of the matches in the top three singles matches went three sets. Bryant scored the points at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to tie the team score, 3-3.
That left Rajan and Bryant's Ada Boru to decide the final score. Boru took the opening set 6-2 and led the second set 5-2 before Rajan stormed back. One point away from the loss, Rajan won five of the next six games to take the second set 7-6 and even the match. Rajan maintained her momentum, winning the third set, 6-2, and giving Rhode Island (1-1) its first win of the spring.
