RHODE ISLAND VS. ELON - SERIES NOTES

  • Saturday's matchup will be the sixth between Rhode Island and Elon all time, with the Phoenix holding a 4-1 lead in the series.
  • Rhode Island is 0-2 when hosting Elon.
  • Elon has won four straight over the Rams, including a 43-28 victory in the 2021 season finale.
  • In the most recent meeting, the Phoenix scored on seven of their first eight possessions.
  • Kicker Skylar Davis, who last week set Elon's career record with his 61st field goal, had five field goals in the win over Rhode Island last season.
  • Despite the loss, Rhody quarterback Kasim Hill threw for a career-high 394 yards and three touchdowns while completing 31-of-55 attempts.
  • Elon enters the game having won five straight contests. The Phoenix are one of 10 FCS schools nationally currently on a win streak of five games or longer. Only Weber State (7), Holy Cross (6), Stonehill (6) and Princeton (6) have longer active streaks.
  • Rhode Island - which had a bye week - is looking for its second straight victory.
  • Rhode Island will need to take care of the football, as Elon is one of the best in the nation at creating turnovers. The Phoenix lead the country in fumble recoveries (9) and are 13th in turnover margin. Elon is plus-5 in turnovers margin (12 gained, 7 lost) through six games.
  • In its three wins, Rhode Island is a combined plus-3 in turnover margin. It the team's two losses, URI is a combined minus-2.

RHODY GROUND GAME VS. ELON FRONT SEVEN WILL BE KEY

  • Rhode Island's ground attack ranks 36th in the nation with an average of 166.8 yards per game.
  • The Rams have rushed for 11 touchdowns, including five over the last two games.
  • Elon leads the CAA and ranks 18th in the country, allowing only 108.3 rushing yards per game.
  • The only opponent to gain more than 150 yards against the Phoenix this season was FBS level Vanderbilt, which had 179 in the first week.
  • Elon has allowed just five rushing touchdown, and only three over its last five contests.

JONES APPROACHING PROGRAM RECORD FOR PASSES DEFENDED

  • Cornerback Jordan Jones is second in the CAA and 28th nationally with 1.2 passes defended.
  • With one break up against Brown, Jones now has 24 passes defended for his career, which is just two shy of the Rhode Island career record.
  • Virgil Gray (2003-06) had 26 passes defended, while Raymond Williams (1983-85) and Chuck Wesley (1998-01) both had 25.
  • With his two interceptions in the season opener, Jones has eight in 16 career games.

HILL ONE TOUCHDOWN PASS FROM 30

  • With two touchdown strikes against Brown, quarterback Kasim Hill tied Vito Priore (2016-19) for fourth place in program history with 29 in his career.
  • Hill needs three more to pass Derek Cassidy (31 from 2005-08) for third place.
  • He also needs 251 passing yards to become the sixth Ram to reach 4,000 for his career.
  • Only Chris Hixson (8,407 from 1993-96); Tom Ehrhardt (8,378 from 1984-85); Cassidy (5,005 from 2005-08); Bob Bentsen (4,359 from 2009-13) and Priore (4,033 from 2016-19) have thrown for more yards for URI.
