How It Happened
Rhode Island fell to both Connecticut and Northeastern in its season-opener tri-meet. Held at UConn's Wolff-Zackin Natatorium, it was a two-day meet that began Friday evening and concluded Saturday afternoon.
Freshman
Rylee Kelly was Rhode Island's best individual performer in the meet. She placed second in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 18:29.25. Connecticut's Norah Rome topped the field of six swimmers with her time of 17:47.57.
Kelly also had a strong showing in the 500-yard free race, taking third place out of 13 swimmers with a time of 5:18.08. Once again, it was Rome besting the field with her time of 5:08.10. URI's
Lyndsey Warner placed sixth in the event with a time of 5:22.25.
Rhode Island's best event of the meet was the 200-yard butterfly, where freshman
Ella Hacker was second and junior
Jenna Salem placed fifth. Hacker's time of 2:10.84 was just behind the winning time of 2:09.65 by UConn's Ella Epes.
Standouts From the Pool
- Freshman Lily Hsu had URI's top finish in the diving events, placing fifth in the 3-meter event. Hsu posted a score of 229.30, coming in just behind the Northeastern duo of Anelisa Kim (232.60) and Lizzie Meschisen (231.95). Northeastern's Kiki Murphy won the event with 248.40 points.
- Freshman Emily Makin placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:27.01. She was two spots in front of sophomore Hannah Benevides (2:29.04. Makin and Benevides were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 100-yard breaststroke.
- Freshman Lyndsey Warner offered a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.95. Classmate Abigail Zadorozny was right behind her with a time of 1:58.07.
- Rhode Island's top finish in the relays came in the form of fourth-place times in both the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard free relay. In the 400, the team of freshman Abigail Zadorozny, freshman Lyndsey Warner, junior Mia Bonvissuto and senior Camryn Kreuscher placed fourth with a time of 3:37.92. In the 200, it was Kreuscher, Zadorozny, Warner and sophomore Quinn Frost posting a time of 1:39.88.
What's Next
Rhode Island has its first home meet of the season when it hosts Assumption and Siena on Saturday, Oct. 15 in the Tootell Aquatic Center. Competition begins at 12:30 p.m.
