KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island freshman
Sophie Herrman has been named the Atlantic 10 Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week after helping the Rams defeat Bucknell over the weekend.
In the team's first match of the spring, Herrman clinched the doubles point and then clinched the overall match to lead Rhode Island to a 4-2 win over Bucknell. She began the day by teaming with junior
Valentina Cvackova to defeat Whitney King and Tyne Miller, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Herman then recorded a straight-set, 6-1, 6-3 win over Miller at No. 3 singles to clinch the team victory for the Rams
Herrman improved to 3-0 when playing at No. 3 singles. Overall, she leads the team with six singles victory. She and Cvackova are tied with the team of
Klara Nelander and
Nikki Fernando for the team lead in doubles victories with six.
Rhode Island has a pair of road matches this weekend. The Rams play at Boston University on Friday and then visit Siena Sunday.
