KINGSTON, R.I. - The Ring of Honor ceremony scheduled for this Saturday will feature Carlton "Silk" Owens, Tom Garrick and Kenny Green.
The three men - all key members of the 1987-88 Sweet 16 team - will be in attendance for Saturday's game against Massachusetts. They will be honored at halftime, with their names and jersey numbers unveiled in the Ryan Center.
Owens, Garrick and Green will all be in attendance both for the Hall of Fame induction dinner Friday night in Newport and for the Ring of Honor ceremony Saturday. The Ring of Honor ceremony will be conducted during halftime of the men's basketball game against Massachusetts on Saturday, Feb. 18. Â
The initial class for the Ring of Honor also includes Cuttino Mobley, Tyson Wheeler and Antonio Reynolds Dean. However, due to scheduling conflicts, the three key members of the 1997-98 Elite 8 squad are unable to attend. The unveiling of their names and jerseys will be postponed until a future date to be determined. Â
"We have been working for several months right up until this weekend to make this a special occasion that works for everyone involved," Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn said. "Unfortunately, professional obligations for Cuttino, Tyson and Antonio will prevent them from being here, despite efforts to make it happen."
Mobley has appearances tied to the NBA All-Star weekend in Utah that prevent him from attending. Wheeler is an assistant coach for the Brown men's basketball team, which plays at Princeton Friday and at Penn Sunday. Reynolds Dean is the associate head coach at Georgia, which plays at Alabama Saturday.
In addition to the ceremony Saturday, the 1987-88 and 1997-98 teams will be officially inducted into the Rhode Island Athletics Hall of Fame Friday night. The induction dinner is being held at the Newport Marriott on America's Cup Avenue on Friday, Feb. 17.
The 1987-88 and 1997-98 men's basketball teams will become the third and fourth full squads inducted to the Rhode Island Athletics Hall of Fame, joining the 1984 and 1985 Yankee Conference-champion football teams. This year marks the 35th and 25th anniversaries of arguably the two most successful men's basketball teams in University history.
The 1987-88 squad was the first in school history to reach the Sweet 16. In fact, the Rams were the first Atlantic 10 school to reach the Sweet 16 after the conference had evolved from the Eastern 8 six years earlier.
The 1997-98 Rams made it to the Elite 8, the deepest NCAA tournament run in program history. The success of that season paved the way for the construction of the Ryan Center, URI's basketball home since the 2002-03 season.
As part of the Hall of Fame dinner, players, coaches and staff members from both teams have been invited for the special weekend.
