Rhody, Fordham Set for Saturday Matinee on USA Network

RHODE ISLAND VS. FORDHAM - SERIES NOTES

  • Rhode Island and Fordham are playing for the 72nd time overall, and the second time this season.
  • URI leads the all-time series, 40-31.
  • Rhode Island is 20-18 as the road team against Fordham.
  • URI won the first meeting of the season, 82-79, on Jan. 4.
  • Redshirt senior Malik Martin and sophomore Ishmael Leggett combined for 40 points in the win. Martin had a career-best 23 points and was 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Leggett had 17 points.
  • Rhode Island never trailed in the first meeting. It opened the game with a 21-6 run and held off Fordham's comeback attempt.
  • Darius Quisenberry led Fordham with 33 points in the first meeting.
  • Rhode Island head coach Archie Miller is 9-0 all time against Fordham, including an 8-0 mark while he was at the helm for Dayton.
  • Fordham and Rhode Island are two of the nation's most productive teams at the free throw line. Fordham leads the Atlantic 10 and is 25th in the nation with 16.1 made free throws per game. Rhode Island is third in the league and 29th nationally with 15.8 points per game.
  • Rhody's Ishmael Leggett leads the A-10 with 135 made free throws, while Fordham's Darius Quisenberry is second with 132.
  • Rhode Island enters the game looking to snap a six-game losing streak, while Fordham has won four of its last five contests.

  • Saturday's game will air nationally on the USA Network with a scheduled 2:30 p.m. start.

LEGGETT, MARTIN EXPLODE IN SAME GAME

  • In Wednesday's overtime loss to George Washington, Rhode Island guards Ishmael Leggett and Malik Martin combined for 51 points. Leggett had 30 points and Martin added 21.
  • It was the most combined points for a pair of URI players in one game since Fatts Russell and Jeff Dowtin had 64 at Saint Joseph's on March 5, 2019.
  • In that game, Russell scored 41 and Dowtin added 23.
  • Wednesday was the second time this season Leggett has scored 30 or more in a game. The first came against Tulane at the Cayman Islands Classic, when he had a career-high 34.
  • Martin's 21 points marked his second 20-point game of the season. His first was a 23-point outing against Fordham on Jan. 4.

THOMAS TAKING CARE OF THE BALL

  • Since returning to the starting lineup three games ago, sophomore point guard Sebastian Thomas has committed just four turnovers over a span of 112 minutes of playing time.
  • He has 13 assists over the same span and is up to a team-high 73 assists for the season.
  • With 73 assists and 42 turnovers, Thomas has a 1.7 assist-turnover ratio.
  • He is averaging 7.7 points per game since returning to the starting role, and 5.2 points per game overall.
