Richards Tied for Second Through Two Rounds

MYRTLE BEACH, N.C. -  Rhode Island's Bryson Richards is tied for second place after two rounds at the Bash at the Beach.

Playing at the par-71 Surf Golf and Beach Club, Richards opened the three-round tournament with a 5-under 66. He and Utah Valley's Caden Weber tied for the low round of the day.

In the second round, Weber was 1-under, while Richards was even par. Weber's overall score of 136 gives him a one-stroke lead over the trio of Richards, Long Island University's Marcelo Mexsen and Appalachian State's Lukas Jonsson heading into Tuesday's final round.

As a team, Rhode Island finished Day One in 10th place in the 18-team field. The Rams were in 11th after shooting +8 in the first round. Rhody cut eight strokes off its second round and was even par at a team, resulting in the Rams moving up a spot with a team score of 580. Oral Roberts leads the field with a -6 (562), followed by host Appalachian State at -2 (566).  

Of the 108 golfers in the field, 15 are under par through two rounds.

  • Senior Bryson Richards is averaging a 3.91 on Par 4s holes, shooting 2-under through two rounds.
  • He has eight birdies and one eagle thus far. The eight birdies is tied for ninth most in the field.
  • Fifth-year senior Brandon Gillis is tied for 26th overall with a 2-over 144 for the day. Gillis fired a 3-under 68 in the second round as he moved up 40 spots in the individual standings.
  • Gillis, like Richards, carded eight birdies for the day.
  • Junior Geronimo Narizzano and senior Andrew DiPetrillo both shot a 150 for the first two rounds and are tied for 67th overall.
  • Freshman Chuck Tragesser is one stroke behind them, tied for 75th overall with a 151.
  • DePetrillo moved up 22 spots with a solid 72 in the second round.
Head Coach Gregg Burke Said...
"If you look at this as a tournament only, we are behind some programs we should be ahead of or have already beaten this year. But, I see this as our first time in competition in five months. We had the 11th best score in the morning, and the fifth best score in the afternoon. We had a chance to really break out in the afternoon because we were playing well and the course conditions were so much easier than the morning.

"Bryson is in position to contend again, and Brandon's three-under in the afternoon was terrific. Right now we need much more from the 3-5 slots, but all three of them showed some toughness in the afternoon."
