SAN PEDRO GARZA - NUEVO LEON, Mexico - Josiah Tong shot 3-under par and
Jack Quinn shot even par to help Rhode Island finish on a high note at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic Tuesday.
Tong made the biggest leap of any player in the field Tuesday, moving up 19 spots on the final day of the tournament. With six birdies, he shot an impressive 69 and finished the tournament in 25th place. He shaved 10 strokes off his second round score to finish the Fall season with his best round of the year.
Quinn was even par for the day, but he was 3-under over his final 11 holes. Rhode Island's top overall finisher, Quinn was tied for 17th in the 63-player field.
"I was very proud of Jack and Josiah today," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "Josiah played some outstanding golf in making six birdies and Jack battled back from some difficult circumstances and went three red on the back nine."
Rhode Island placed ninth in the 10-team field. Coming off a plus-30 in the second round that caused the Rams to go from first place to last place in one round, the Rams responded. URI was plus-7, cutting 23 strokes off the team score from Monday afternoon. The Rams overtook Eastern Washington to get out of the basement.
Host George Washington won the tournament by shooting 11-under par on the final day to jump five spots in the team standings. The Revolutionaries finished three strokes ahead of Loyola Maryland for the title.
"It was an interesting tournament both on and off the golf course," Burke said. "We are grateful for the opportunity the great people of Monterrey provided and the first-class event run by George Washington University."
