Davidson Outslugs Rhody to Take Rubber Game

How it Happened
Rhode Island dug too many holes for itself as it was outslugged 15-9 by Davidson in the finale of the three-game series Saturday afternoon.

The visiting Wildcats (23-15, 9-3 Atlantic 10) opened the game with six runs in the top of the first inning. The first seven batters reached safely as Davidson scored five runs before any outs were recorded. The guests added a sixth run before the frame ended.

Rhody (17-19, 7-5 A-10) chipped way in the bottom of the first with three runs. Michael Anderson had an RBI double to drive in Alex Ramirez, and Eric Genther followed with a two-run homer that cut the deficit in half.

Neither side scored over the next three innings, but Davidson struck for four runs in the top of the fifth, building the lead back to 10-3. Rhody came back with a four-run rally of its own in the bottom of the sixth. Jack Hopko hit a ground-rule double to drive in Rob Butler, and Addison Kopack singled to bring pinch runner Brody McKenzie around. Anderson then drilled a two-run homer to left to pull the Rams back to 10-7.

The Wildcats tacked on a single run in the top of the seventh, but URI kept fighting. After Billy Butler singled to lead off the home half of the inning, Anthony DePino hit a two-run shot to left, making the score 11-9.

That was as close as the Rams got, as Davidson padded its lead with three runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth inning to grab the series victory.
