Baseball Walked Off at Fordham

How it Happened
The Rhode Island baseball team came out on the losing side of a pitchers duel on Saturday afternoon at Houlihan Park, dropping a 1-0 result to Fordham. The win was the only one of the weekend for the home team, as URI (11-16, 3-3 A-10) took both Thursday and Friday's contests to secure the Atlantic 10 series victory, its first of the year.

Fordham's (13-19, 2-4 A-10) game-winning run was scored on a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. Rhode Island had previously had a chance to score in its half of the frame when Calvin McCall and Addison Kopack were walked, but the offense was unable to prevent the shutout.

Rhody's starter Braeden Perry was dominant on the mound, throwing a career-long 7.0 scoreless innings to keep the team in it throughout the day. The freshman fanned five batters while scattering a pair of hits and forced Fordham to strand six runners.

After combining for 19 hits in its previous two outings, Rhode Island's offense struggled against southpaw Austin Sachen and turned in four knocks over the course of his 6.2 innings. The team's best chance to score during the stretch came in the top of the fourth when Eric Genther (HBP), Billy Butler (single) and Anthony DePino (walk) got on, but all three runners were left on the base paths.

Zach Fernandez (0-1) was tagged with the loss and finished his outing with three strikeouts through 1.2 innings of the work.

Inside the Box Score
  • Redshirt junior Addison Kopack and redshirt-senior Billy Butler led the offense with two hits apiece.
  • Sophomore Eric Genther accounted for the team's other hit.
  • All but two Rams in the lineup managed to work their way on base.
  • Butler also turned in a pair of stolen bases. Kopack and Genther swiped one bag apiece.
  • This marked the fifth time in Fordham's 32 games that the team was limited to one run or less.
  • Freshman Braeden Perry did not allow any extra-base hits and matched his career-low with the two singles he gave up.
  • Redshirt junior Zach Fernandez recorded three of his five outs on strikes.

What's Next
Rhode Island is slated for a pair of midweek contests on Tuesday, April 11 and Wednesday, April 12. The Rams will head to in-state foe Brown before coming home to host Holy Cross at Bill Beck Field.
