WAKEFIELD, R.I. - Rhode Island picked up its second Atlantic 10 win, blanking Saint Joseph's 5-0 Sunday morning.
The Rams (6-14, 2-3) pulled out several close matches, as play was competitive throughout the lineups.
Nikki Fernando and
Priyanka Shanker got things started at No. 3 doubles with a 6-2 victory over Ireland Amato and Sophie Amato. Fernando and Shanker improved to 7-2 together in the No. 3 doubles slot.
After Saint Joseph's (5-8, 0-5 A-10) took the No. 1 doubles match,
Paulina Loredo and
Nadia Rajan teamed up for a 7-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. Their victory over Emily Elliott and Kirsten Wijnsema gave URI the doubles point for a 1-0 lead.
From there, Rhody won out despite most of the singles matches being back-and-forth affairs. Fernando picked up her 10th singles win of the year with a straight-set 6-0, 6-2 win over Fabiana Tort-Umpierre at No. 4 singles in the day's most one-sided match.
Senior
Paulina Loredo was next to finish, rallying to beat Sophia Amato 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. That put URI within one point of clinching the team win. Rhody actually picked up two more wins, as the matches at No. 2 singles and No. 1 singles finished within moments of each other.
Valentina Cvackova secured the overall victory with a 6-4, 7-6 (7) win over Charlotte Kordonowy in the second spot. Freshman
Sophie Herrman capped the day by outlasting Stow Weiss 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the No. 1 slot.
Rhode Island will host NJIT at the Newport International Hall of Fame Saturday, April 15. The match begins at 7 p.m.
