KINGSTON, R.I. - Following a successful selection camp, Rhode Island Rowing's
Catie Castle has secured a spot in the women's quadruple sculls that will represent the United States at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
A graduate student from Vero Beach, Fla., she is the first Ram to represent the rowing team on an international scale since Allie Reilly ('19) and Karen Petrik ('19), who along with head coach
Shelagh Donohoe won silver for the United States at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021.
"
Catie Castle is one of the hardest-working rowers that I have ever coached," Donohoe said. "Even as a high school athlete, Castle had told us that she was going to make a national team. I had no doubt she would put her best effort into it and I am so happy to see that her dream has come true. I know she will represent the United States of America with the same toughness that she shows every day at the University of Rhode Island."
Castle will sit in the second seat of the quad, behind Meena Baher (Harvard) and Lauren Benedict (Virginia) and ahead of Rosemary Varney (UCLA). The regatta is the premier event for rowers under the age of 23 and offers a total of 22 events, per the USRowing release. The U.S. will have entries in 17 of the 22 boat classes.
A member of the Varsity 8+ in each of her three seasons rowing for the Rams, Castle is a two-time Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference honoree.
