Rhody Golfers Enjoying a Summer of Success

KINGSTON, R.I. - A number of Rhode Island Rams current and future have had impressive showings in summer golf events.

Leading the returnees is Bryson Richards who won the Vermont Amateur at an impressive nine-under par at the Country Club of Barre July 4-6. On July 17 he competed in the USGA Amateur Qualifier and, in a three-man playoff, became the first alternate in the field.

Rising sophomore Aidan O'Donovan was medalist in the Mass Open Qualifier, going two-under at the Ridge Club, defeating a dozen golf professionals along the way. He also qualified for the Mass Amateur during a stretch when he posted red numbers in six straight rounds over four tournaments. Classmate Chuck Tragesser qualified for the WPGA Amateur and WPGA Open as well as the Pennsylvania Amateur. Rising senior Geronimo Narizzano had a great outing at the US Amateur Qualifier at Ledgemont Country Club and actually led the field after 29 holes before struggling a bit down the stretch.

Two newcomers have had a hot summer as well. Sebastian Carlsson won the Challenge Cup Junior Invitational in March and followed that by winning the Rhode Island State High School Championship. He also was named the R.I. High School Golfer of the Year.

Josiah Tong has been on fire since the start of spring play. In four consecutive Maple Leaf Junior Tournaments, he finished no lower than fourth. In the prestigious World Stars Junior Golf International he went 69-64-67 for 16-under par in Las Vegas and second place by one shot. He followed that with medalist honors in the Future College Golf Calloway Junior World Championship with scores of 69-70-61 to finish 16 under. The final-round 61 featured 10 birdies and an eagle and set the course record by three shots.

"Summer play at a high level is crucial to our success," head coach Gregg Burke said. "Obviously Bryson and Josiah have shown they deserve to be in the lineup from Day One. Aidan has shown stretches where he proved how talented he is, and the other guys have also played some pretty good golf. And that is all before we have Tony Liu on board. He was the best player at IMG Academy last year and took the summer to return to China. He has played some spectacular golf there already.

"The prospects are bright and continued hard work on the golf course and in the gym will determine who starts for us in September."
