KINGSTON, R.I. - Jonas Brobeck has been named as the Rhode Island women's tennis coach, Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn announced Wednesday.
"We are so excited to welcome Jonas Brobeck to the URI Athletics family," Bjorn said. "Jonas has been incredibly successful as the head coach at Northwestern State, and we are looking forward to work with him to bring the same level of success here. He has all the characteristics we were looking for in hiring the next leader for our tennis program and we are very excited to have him get started."
Brobeck comes to Rhode Island from Northwestern State University, where he has been the head coach since August of 2020. In 2022, he led the team to a Southland Conference title and an unbeaten record in league play. It was the program's first league title since 2014, and the team won the title while playing three freshmen among the top four spots in the lineup. Brobeck was tabbed as the conference's Coach of the Year.
A proven recruiter, his 2021 class at Northwestern State was ranked ninth overall among mid-major programs by tennisrecruiting.net. In his two years at the helm, the Demons posted team grade-point averages of 3.87 (2021) and 3.72 (2022).
Brobeck also has been an assistant coach at Northwestern State (2018-2020), Morehead State (2013-2015) and UNC Ashville (2012-13). Additionally, the Stockholm, Sweden native worked with tennis youth at Nasbypark Tennis Club in his home country for three years. He worked with teen players daily in individual and group settings, also serving as a travel coach for top juniors during regional, national and ITF tournaments.
Additionally, Brobeck coached two professional players from the club, Christoffer Solberg and Anette Munozova.
Brobeck was an all-conference player during his collegiate career at UNC Ashville. As a senior captain, he led the team to a program-best second-place finish in the Big South.
Brobeck earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from UNC Ashville in 2012 and later added a master's degree from Northwestern State in sports administration.
